On March 12, the concert band performed at the district 11 band festival earning an overall excellent rating.  One of the most important things in life is to learn to evaluate one's progress both as an individual and as part of a group (in this case - band).  Please find in the links below the band festival evaluation project (or alternative projects), our JHMS Concert  Band performance recordings, links to the judge's written comments (and cursive translation), and the recordings of the  judge's verbal comments on our performance.

CONCERT BAND

Star Spangled Banner - Audition - Due in the 4th Quarter

For the last 25 years 7th & 8th grade band members have played the Star Spangled Banner an as audition for our Spring concert.  Musically, the piece teaches dotted quarter/eighth notes, dotted eighth/sixteenth notes, playing in the concert key of A-flat, 3/4 time, phrasing, and the playing range of an octave and a fifth. Controversy aside, the piece relates to a lot of rich local history in the War of 1812 which involves battles with the British in Charles County's own Benedict Maryland, attacks in Washington DC when the White House was burned to the ground, and the famous Fort McHenry battle in Baltimore.

Please find the audition piece for your instrument of the band.  Record yourself on your smart phone, upload your recording to your favorite online storage (OneDrive, GoogleDrive, iCloud, DropBox, etc), and send the link to cwhitford@ccboe.com so we can hit the ground running when we get back to school.  Reminder that the school system provides all charles county students with Office 365 which should include a free OneDrive.
